As many of you know Liberia’s elections are coming up next week, October 10, 2017. With over 25 political parties and countless individuals running for the office of president (and county representatives and local positions), the sheer volume of politicians is overwhelming and confusing. Given the recent history of violence in Liberia and the history of electoral violence in the continent of Africa, there is a lot of uncertainty as to what will happen and this is leaving people wondering. How will this election turn out? Will it be peaceful? Will it be fair, free from corruption and violence? Will the public and politicians alike accept the results of the election? What type of leader will be elected? Will Liberia move forward or fall behind under the direction of this new leader? Is God watching? Where is God and does He care?
We know God is watching, that He hears us when we cry out to Him, and we know that God cares. All throughout the country churches are on their knees praying and trusting God with this election and for the well-being of their beloved Mama Liberia. This country has already been through so much in these recent years, so much pain, violence, death, disease, corruption, betrayal, fear, anxiety, disappointment, and too many injustices to count. After a century plus of systematic oppression, a long and violent war, and then the Ebola epidemic, Liberia is finally in a more stable place where they have the chance to heal and to move forward. Liberia needs to move forward. Liberia cannot afford to go backwards anymore. We are placing our eyes on the future and all that is to come, all which will be restored, healed, accomplished, freed, and redeemed. And that is why we are asking God for His mercy and protection during this election season. He is our hope and our comfort during these uncertain times. We are crying out to Him alongside our brothers and sisters of Liberia, asking God for His presence and His hand to be upon the country and for Him to take control. We know that He is a good Father and we are praising and trusting in Him.
We invite you to join us and the church here in praying for Liberia during this election season. During the seven days surrounding the Liberian election (from October 7th to October 13th), we will be posting daily prayers accompanied by scripture and specific meditations. We will be praying for safety, justice, peace, protection, discernment, wisdom, equality, faith, honesty, Godly leadership, and most of all God’s sovereignty no matter what.
“Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever” Psalm 107:1
The LORD hears his people when they call to him for help. He rescues them from all their troubles. Psalm 34:17
“Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings. And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.” 1 Peter 5:8-10
